Reflexive and Cognitive Responses…..The Connection between our brain and The Environment & Survival
There are processes that do not need any cognition at all. For example…an automated process. The autonomic nervous system, and in a crowded room where the noise is overwhelming somehow we hear our name through all the noise when someone yells out my name louder than the noise of the room. Our brain just picks it out for us and that is so we can wonder, who is talking about me? We cognitively wonder about that question. Who called my name? All the cognitive consideration is done after the initial, automatic, work our brain did for us automatically.
If one person folds their arms in conversation another will automatically respond. We pick up on accents and sometimes will respond with the same kind of accent, and that is automatic without cognitively being aware of it. It is the chameleon effect, and is an automatic response without thinking or being cognitively aware of it. Chameleon effects or imprinting from mirror neurons is how I think of these behaviours. A tiny child imprints movements of mouth, tongue, eyes, sounds like sneezes, how people walk, how they swing their arms, and this is done from mirror neurons. Adults when feeding an infant solid food, can do the same mouth movements as the baby when feeding, without thinking. These are called reflexes brought on by “mirror neurons.” Our brain internalizes these actions as if we did it in some way.
If you see a robot with emotions, and you believe that they can feel, you feel empathy for the robot. We are fully reactive to our environment. We see this is called emotional contagion. We take cues from our environment and take cues from them. In India, they do what is called a belly laugh, as they believe laughing is good for your soul. And this laughter is copied. I must interject here for myself, “I cannot force a false laughter, as it has to be real.” I am unable to do that process for whatever reason. What happens is an action is formed to respond to precognition, and this response is formed in the amygdala in a purely reflexive reaction, but justified by some principal. The brain has many separate elements that work at the same time. The amygdala works on many of the automatic and precognitive aspects, but the pre – cognitive functions occur in the frontal cortex, but the thoughtful cognitions happen in the frontal cortex. The action is begun on a reaction but in the amygdala on a purely reflexive action. The frontal lobe will kick into action after the amygdala and respond with a perfectly formed, and coherent narrative. The narrative is formed to make a logical sense of our environment for us to adapt to or for us to understand so we can adapt, and self determine how to rationally respond to our environments, both biologically psychologically and the biological biospheres, because we are biological organisms. It is an ongoing process all day of taking data in, responding to the data, via senses, through the amygdala or responding reflexively to our biological environment. Actions and reactions can be independent from the Executive function, but with me, because I have trained my mind to slow down when answering, a lot of thought goes into my answers when speaking to people, if I do speak. I have learned to slow myself down in speak and thought and action. To feel my feelings first then respond. It is a new technique of how to deal with emotions, feelings, and keeping yourself calm. If I get angry however, these feelings are often quite reflexive as a way to vent. I am not violent, nor will I ever be, but I do have very strong opinions, beliefs, and reflexive ways of looking at my environment and also to respond to my environment. My brain decides for me, in reflexes how to respond, but i take my time in responding. I have studied behaviours long enough to know that you train yourself to not respond without giving time for thought. My emotional and interpretive responses have been trained to be very distinct. Evolutionary this is a good thing. However, I have learned to be comfortable with myself, and not be around others, as I find them exhausting. We are a huge part of our environment and we are consistantly all day long, just responding to our environment.
But just as we are automatically and reflexively responding to our environment from senses, and Hans Selye fight and flight, we are also responding with non cognitive judgments and principled that are socialized into the mind through symbolism. Sociologists and Psychologists have studied this phenomenon through Eco psychology.
We have evolved through an evolutionary process from 250,000 years ago, when we came out of Africa and we see across the Globe these common behaviours and needs across all Nations. Some of these behaviours we have today in common, are ancestral behaviours of advantage for survival. How could being kind be an advantage for survival in a dangerous world?
As you can see from the wars in the world, and attacking people at music concerts, or through truck rallies, or attacking with guns, it is not advantages for survival of an existing group of people. Loving is the way to be kind. Loving is considered to be AGAPE, AMOUR, AND EROS. Leaderships of care.
P.S. …….I DO NOT SEE AR 15’S AS A WAY TO SURVIVE. I DO NOT SEE WAR AS A WAY FOR HUMAN KIND TO SURVIVE. I DO NOT SEE DOING GAIN OF FUNCTION RESEARCH AS A WAY FOR A BIOLOGICAL ORGANISM, THAT IS BIOLOGICALLY ATTACKED GREAT FOR SURVIVAL. I DO NOT SEE LIES AS A WAY TO SURVIVE. I DO NOT SEE TRAITORS AS A WAY TO SURVIVE.
