Transthyretin Cardiac Amyloidosis is Caused by ATTR – CM caused by a Protein Produced by the Liver

Transthyretin cardiac amyloidosis (ATTR – CM) is a heart disease that occurs when something goes wrong with a protein produced by the Liver. The organs mostly affected by amyloidosis are the kidney, liver, and heart. Hereditary Amyloidosis (familial amyloidosis) is an inherited disorder often effecting the nerves  in the heart, kidney and it most commonly occurs when a protein made by the liver is abnormal.  It commonly effects eyes and can be triggered by a chronic disease, infection or cancer, as AA amyloidosis, mutations of antibody producing cells and AL Amyloidosis.  Signs and symptoms of Amyloidosis is fatigue weak or tired, a swollen belly, legs ankle and feet.

The Liver makes a protein called transthyretin, or prealbumin. Excessive normal (wild type ATTR)  or mutant transthyretin can cause amyloid deposits. The precursor molecule is serum amyloid A (SAA) an acute phase reactant which can be used as a surrogate marker. Amyloidosis  are aggregates of proteins.

Some diseases that are associated with amyloidosis include multiple myeloma,  Hodgkin disease, some types of tumours, and Liver dysfunction and Mediterranean fever that runs in families, and can be paired with covid 19, or with aging. Amyloids can be found in the pancreas from people who develop diabetes, and starts in the bone marrow where the disease starts.

Some people are born with mutations, or changes, in their body’s genes that cause genetic liver diseases. Parents might pass these gene changes to their children. Genetic liver diseases affect your liver’s ability to process nutrients and remove toxins from your blood.

The skin, kidney, endocrine organs, eyes and liver are also affected by systemic COVID-19 disease.  Although data on COVID-19-related liver abnormalities in patients remain limited, liver injury in patients is associated with prolonged hospitalization.

In rare cases, inflammatory diseases of the heart may occur following vaccination with Pfizer or Novavax: myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle) or pericarditis (inflammation of the outer lining of the heart). The incidence of myocarditis and pericarditis ranges between 1 and 10 in 100,000 people per year.  COVID-19 may be associated with liver damage due to direct injury to the liver cells caused by the viral infection, delayed resolution of inflammation, and viral persistence March 23, 2023.

The pandemics of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) coexist. Elevated liver function tests are frequent in COVID-19 and may influence liver damage in NAFLD, while preexisting liver damage from NAFLD may influence the course of COVID-19.
